Tyler Allgeier NFL Draft Player Profile
Tyler Allgeier is a former 2-star recruit out of Kaiser High School in Fontana, California. Coming out of high school, Allgeier did not have a single offer from a division I team. According to his recruiting profile on 247sports, he did not have a single school interested in him. According to Maxpreps throughout his career at Kaiser, he put up very impressive stats. His sophomore season, he carried the ball 149 times and rushed for 981 yards and 10 touchdowns. His junior year, he carried the ball 234 times and rushed for 1,635 yards and 17 touchdowns. Finally, his senior year was the most impressive by a longshot. He racked up a total of 2,470 on 231 carries and 29 touchdowns.
After his successful high school career, he enrolled at BYU and walked on as a freshman. He redshirted his first year on the team and barely saw the field on the offensive side his second year on the team.
Meanwhile, in the 2020 season he saw the field a lot more. In this season, he rushed for 1,130 yards and 13 touchdowns. He also had a total of 174 receiving yards in only 14 receptions. Just like his senior year in high school, this season was by far his most impressive and what has caught the eye of scouts through out the league.
Strengths
Patience
I love watching a running back who is willing to sit back behind the line and let the play develop before they make a move. This is exactly why I love Allgeier’s game. Allgeier does a great job of letting his offensive linemen open up a gap for him. Eventually, when Allgeier sees green grass in front of him, he takes off like he was shot out of a cannon. Personally, I love do-it-all running backs and having someone like Allgeier who is powerful, quick and patient is a dream come true. He is also very patient when pass blocking. Even if he is running a checkdown route, he hesitates and makes sure no defender is going to breakthrough off the edge.
Power

BYU RB Tyler Allgeier
Allgeier’s power is primarily what makes me fall in love with his film. When Allgeier is handed the ball, I don’t recommend getting in his way, because he is like a freight train. Another reason why I love his game is because he is not scared to take a hit. When running up the gap, Allgeier does not panic when the defense collapses. As a matter of fact, he drops his shoulder and fights for yards. Seeing him embracing contact and fighting for yards reminds me of AJ Dillon.
His power also comes into play when pass blocking. To see how good of a pass blocker he is, I wanted to watch film from the 2020 season. In this season, he had a bigger pass blocking role than this year because he was protecting Zach Wilson. When a defender was running at Allgeier, he rarely chop-blocked. He usually set his feet and powered through the contact in order to stall the defender.
Speed
Usually when you have a power-back like Allgeier you have a tendency to overlook his speed. This is exactly what I did until I watched the game against Coastal Carolina last year. Early on in the first quarter, he found a gap in the defense and punished them by taking it home for a 42-yard TD. I can’t emphasize enough how important, yet rare, it is to find a running back who can embrace contact and run a 4.4 40-yard dash. (Update: Tyler Allgeier 40 time was a 4.6 at NFL Draft Combine.)
Weaknesses
Shiftiness

BYU RB Tyler Allgeier
As I noted earlier, Allgeier has sneaky speed for his size. Although he is fast, he is more of a north-south runner than he is elusive. When in the open field, Allgeier can make defenders miss but not on a consistent basis. At the next level Allgeier will likely start out as a rotational back and primarily run inside zones. If this is the case he won’t need to rely on his elusiveness, but I think it will go a long way if he improves it. If he does work on his shiftiness, I can see him being a fantastic complimentary piece to a run-heavy offense. Over time, I would like to see Allgeier learn to be more elusive that way he does a better job of keeping a defense on their toes.
Field Vision
One of the biggest weaknesses that I found in his game is his field vision once he gets passed the line of scrimmage. When watching his film, I kept realizing that when he would rely strictly on his power and speed to make a play. Personally, I like to see a running back keep his head on a swivel and look for holes in the defense. Although he does a great job of this in the backfield, he has some improving to do in the open field.
Tyler Allgeier Draft Stock
At the moment, I project Allgeier to be a day 3 pick. With this being said, I could see a team taking a chance on him in a earlier round because of his potential. Personally, I think the earliest he will go is the late 5th round. If he were to do well at the combine, I could see his stock rising to the early 5th.
Final Thoughts on Tyler Allgeier Scouting Report
Allgeier is a rare breed of running back. As I noted earlier, I love running backs who can do it all and Allgeier is just that. I can’t think of many running backs in the NFL who have his size, speed and patience. Although I do have concerns about his elusiveness, I do think that after a few years in the NFL, he will be a solid rotational running back.
Player Comparison
When watching his film, it reminded me of a type of running back that I am familiar with. As a Wisconsin fan, I have seen many backs like Allgeier go through the program. With this being said, he reminds me of a former Wisconsin running back Corey Clement.
